mTuitive

mTuitive’s software helps pathologists and surgeons capture clinically relevant data by following required guidelines, recording information accurately, and working more efficiently all while providing better patient care.

We sourced pathologists and surgeons across the US, Canada, and the UK.

These hour-long interviews dug into their larger workflows, from when they’re assigned a case to the sign-out. Stimuli used within the interviews helped us learn how things like AI should—or should not—be implemented.

Understanding the larger workflow of pathologists and surgeons revealed key differences.

While both audiences have to fill out form-style reports, their approaches to creating these reports were wildly different, Surgeons start with a narrative report, telling the story of the surgery because it's the easiest way to recall all the details. But for pathologists, there's not much of a narrative workflow, it's more a series of datapoints to check and record. When it came time to design, we incorporated flexibility for both styles of working.

Practitioners wanted to add friction in the name of patient safety.

While the thought of a minimal to no-click report interface is enticing, pathologists and surgeons admitted it may be too easy, leading to mistakes. Our design challenge was to balance the efficiencies of AI with human verification. The final concept blended auto-filled fields, transparent confidence ratings, safeguards, and of course, source data.

At the end of it all, how can we make users look good?

Our research revealed something unexpected: AI isn’t the only differentiator these days. Pathologists want their reports to reflect the care and precision they bring to their work. They don’t just want to edit for accuracy—they want to shape how their findings are seen and understood by others. We uncovered a new unmet need that mTuitive has an opportunity to solve: give clinicians control over both the content and the presentation of their reports.

Embedding with mTuitive sparked stronger outcomes.

Having the client team attend interviews, dive into research analysis, and iterate on the prototype not only led to a refined project output, but built the client team’s empathy for the users and problem-solving perspective for the future.

Synoptic reporting has never looked so good.
